Would You Watch Sofia Coppola’s Twilight?

What if at least one of the Twilight films were directed by Sofia Coppola? The question isn’t completely implausible, as Coppola met with studio execs to do just that. Why that pairing never happened, it turns out, had a lot to do with Coppola’s view of the fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone to promote her latest film, Priscilla, Coppola confirmed that she was in talks to direct the final Twilight film adaptation, Breaking Dawn Part 2.

“We had one meeting, and it never went anywhere, she told Rolling Stone. “I thought the whole imprinting-werewolf thing was weird. The baby. Too weird! But part of the earlier Twilight could be done in an interesting way. I thought it’d be fun to do a teen-vampire romance, but the last one gets really far out.”

I think more than a few other folks might agree with Coppola’s statement that Jacob imprinting and falling in romantic love with a baby is just… too weird, though there are millions of Twilight fans who strongly disagree with her.

And while we’ll sadly never see a Coppola-directed Twilight feature, there’s still a chance we might see her helm another genre film in the future. “I think it’d be fun to do sci-fi and I think it’d be fun to do, not like gory, but I like gothic horror,” she added. “I don’t have an idea, though.”

If Hulu’s TV series adaptation of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic doesn’t pan out, I’d love to see Coppola tackle that in movie form. Someone mail her a copy!
